Ashramchela
A community of Ma’s chelas has been living in Ashram Brindavon for over 25 years now. While most of them pursue their daily occupations outside the ashram, a few Chelas are employed by the ashram as caretakers.
In addition to the chelas introduced on this page, there are many other chelas — the satsang — who do not live in Ashram Brindavon but practice seva regularly in both ashram and also support them from the very beginning. The majority of them are actively involved in the Friends Association of the ashram.
Satsangchela, Ashramchela and, more and more often, also visitors all together help to care for both ashrams with great devotion. Guided by Durgamayi Ma, we engage in the daily practice of Bhakti Yoga and seva.

- Shivayama’s and Bhairava’s son Narendra

Caretaker
A caretaker in an ashram is someone who takes responsibility for looking after it. Every caretaker is responsible for a certain area in which he or she is the contact person for Ma.
Chokidar
A chokidar takes care of visitors to the ashram, welcomes them at the entrance, helps them with any questions, and is the person to contact if anything is needed.
Chela
A chela is a spiritual disciple of a living master.
Dham
The word Dham originates from Sanskrit and means abode or sacred place of residence—especially the abode of a deity or divine presence. Rabboo Joshi, one of Maharajji’s eldest chelas, visited the ashram in 2023 and lovingly referred to the city as Ulm Dham.
Pujari
The pujari performs and leads the aarti, an Indian light ceremony in which the divine is honored.
Seva / Sevaka
Seva is selfless service and a fundamental spiritual practice in Bhakti Yoga, as it helps us learn to renounce the fruits of our own actions. We practice seva to learn how to focus more and more on HOW we do things and thus become present in the very moment.
A sevaka is someone who practices seva.
