Shivaratri
On Shivaratri, people all over the world celebrate the night of Shiva. It symbolizes the overcoming of darkness within ourselves, as Shiva stands for the highest self-realization, for the unity of all opposites and the divine essence beyond all form. We celebrate this supreme consciousness in our GuruMa and likewise that it is inherent in all human beings - which means in each one of us.

Shivaratri is the wedding night of Lord Shiva. And the wedding in question here is the spiritual union within. One can also say of body and soul, of human nature and divine nature, of inside and outside, of dark and light.
